MORE COMMON IMMUNE-SYSTEM DISEASES: RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS AND ROCKY MOUNTAIN SPOTTED FEVER
RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS: chronic inflammation of joints.
Signs and Symptoms: fatigue; malaise; early morning stiffness of joints and muscles. Swelling of joints occurs, usually starting in the small joints such as hands, feet, ankles, wrists, elbows, although it can occur in any joint. Usually both sides of the body are affected simultaneously (for example, both wrists or both elbows). Deformities of joints can occur, and contractures of joints are also seen. Fever may be present. Lungs may also be affected.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN SPOTTED FEVER: caused by the bite of a tick carrying the germ Rickettsia. It’s called Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, but it has been found in almost every state.
Signs and Symptoms: occur suddenly. Headaches; fever; chills; pains in muscles; pains in joints; cough that usually produces no sputum. A rash, first appearing on the extremities, then the rest of the body including the neck and face. Victim can develop severe lethargy; weakness; difficulty in sleeping; pneumonia; can become delirious, may even fall into coma.
